Beginning as a volunteer at the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) in 1979, Lori Kaplan served as the CEO from 1987-2018. During that time the LAYC expanded into Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties and founded four public charter schools: The Next Step, Youthbuild, the LAYC Career Academy and the Latin American Montessori Bilingual. Kaplan serves on many boards of directors and has been a frequent speaker on issues related to youth development, immigration and the development of the Latino community. She was the 1997 Washingtonian of the Year and has been recognized locally and nationally for her commitment to service.
